Just want Silent Spring?
Listen. Do you hear the birds singing? Chirp, chirp, chirp. Do you hear the bees buzzing? Bzzzz, bzzzz. The frogs are croaking, too. Ribbit, ribbit. These are the happy sounds of springtime. But what if one day, all the sounds went away? What if the world was very, very quiet? I am a book, and I hold a very special story. My story is about keeping our world full of beautiful sounds, so the birds always have a song to sing. My name is Silent Spring, and I want to tell you my story.
A very kind woman made me. Her name was Rachel Carson, and she was my friend. Rachel loved nature more than anything. She loved to watch the little birds fly and the busy bees buzz. One day, a long, long time ago, on September 27th, 1962, she wrote her words inside my pages. Rachel saw that some things people were using to help their gardens grow were making the birds and bugs feel sick. This made her sad. She wanted to help all the little creatures. So, she wrote my story to share her important idea with everyone in the whole world.
My job is to travel from person to person, sharing Rachel’s story. I sit on shelves and in hands, waiting for someone to read my words. When people read my story, they understood. They learned that they needed to be better helpers for our animal friends. They learned how to protect the birds in the sky, the bees in the flowers, and the fish in the water. Because of the story I tell, we all work together now. We make sure the spring is never silent, but always full of happy songs.
