The story

A Dance of Secrets and Heartbeats

Can you hear that music. It sounds like a sigh and a smile all at once, played on a special kind of accordion called a bandoneón. Now, imagine two people holding each other close, their feet making secret patterns on the floor. Sometimes they take quick, sharp steps, and other times they glide slowly and gracefully, like they are telling a story without a single word. I am a dance filled with strong feelings, a little bit of drama, and a whole lot of heart. I am Tango.

I was born a very long time ago, back in the 1880s. My home was in the busy port cities of Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay. Big ships arrived there, carrying people from all over the world, like Spain, Italy, and Africa. They were immigrants, people who came looking for a new life and new dreams. But they were often lonely and missed their homes far away. To feel better, they would gather in the streets and courtyards. They brought their different kinds of music and dances with them. All their feelings of hope, sadness, and friendship swirled together. Out of that powerful mix, I was created. I became their way of talking when they didn't speak the same language, a way to connect through movement and the soulful sound of the bandoneón.

At first, I was a dance just for the common people in the poorer neighborhoods. But my beauty and passion couldn't be kept a secret for long. Soon, I danced my way out of the small courtyards and into fancy ballrooms where people wore elegant clothes. In the early 1900s, I even traveled across the big ocean on a ship, all the way to Paris, France. People there fell in love with me. Soon I was dancing in London, Berlin, and cities all over the world. People who had never been to Argentina were fascinated by my dramatic steps and the powerful, close connection between the dancers. A very famous singer named Carlos Gardel sang my songs, and his amazing voice helped me travel even farther, reaching more hearts than ever before.

Today, I am still danced all over the world. People dance with me to feel close to someone, to share a story, or just to feel the music in their hearts. On September 30th, 2009, something wonderful happened. I was named a special treasure for all of humanity, something important to protect forever. I am more than just steps. I am a feeling, like a hug set to music. When you see me, you are watching a conversation between two hearts. I prove that you don't always need words to share your deepest feelings. I am a dance that reminds everyone that art can bring us all together, no matter where we come from.
