Just want Samba?
Can you hear that. Boom-chicka-boom-chicka-boom. It’s a sound that makes your feet want to tap and your heart feel happy, like sunshine warming you up. It’s the deep thump of drums, the cheerful strum of stringed instruments, and the sound of many voices singing together. This happy music fills the air in warm, colorful places, inviting everyone to move. You can feel it in your wiggling toes and your smiling face. I am the sound of a party, the dance of friendship. I am Samba.
My story begins in Brazil, a beautiful and sunny country, a long, long time ago, in the late 19th century. I was born from the music and memories of people who came to Brazil all the way from Africa. In amazing places like Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, they would gather in big circles called ‘samba de roda’. Inside the circle, they would clap, sing songs from their hearts, and dance to share their stories and their joy. Then, a very exciting thing happened. In 1917, a song called ‘Pelo Telefone’, which means ‘On the Telephone’, was the very first recording of me. That meant my music could travel through the radio and visit homes all across Brazil.
People loved my happy beat so much that they wanted to celebrate me in the biggest way possible. They created special groups called ‘samba schools’, not for reading and math, but for practicing my music and dances all year long. The very first one, called ‘Deixa Falar’, which means ‘Let Them Talk’, was created way back in 1928. Every year, these samba schools get ready for a giant party called Carnival. It’s a huge parade with amazing, colorful costumes covered in sparkles and feathers, and enormous floats that look like magical castles or giant animals. Thousands of people dance together in the streets, all moving to my joyful rhythm.

Today, I have traveled far beyond Brazil. You can hear my beat in movies you watch, at birthday parties, and at big celebrations all over the world. I am more than just a dance; I am a feeling of happiness and togetherness. Whenever you hear a beat that makes you want to smile and move, you are feeling my spirit. I am a reminder to celebrate life with everyone around you.
