The story

The Terracotta Army

I am buried deep under grassy hills, standing perfectly still in the quiet dark. For a very, very long time, the only sound was the whisper of the earth around me. I am an army of thousands, with clay horses, chariots, and soldiers. We all stand in neat rows, ready for a battle that never comes. Every single one of my soldiers has a different face, a different mustache, and a different hairstyle. Can you imagine that? An entire army where no two people look the same. We have been waiting here, a silent secret. I am the Terracotta Army.

I was created for a very important person: the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. He was a powerful ruler who wanted to be safe even after his life was over. Way back around the year 246 BCE, he ordered thousands of clever craftspeople, called artisans, to make me. They worked for many years to build this amazing army just for him. They used a special kind of reddish-brown clay called terracotta to shape every soldier, horse, and chariot by hand. It was hard work. They gave us clay armor to wear and real weapons to hold. At first, we were not just brown clay. We were painted in bright, beautiful colors like purple, red, and blue. We must have looked so real. The emperor wanted his forever guard to be perfect, and the artisans made sure we were.

After the emperor's life ended around the year 210 BCE, my job began. I was carefully buried in big underground rooms, called pits, to stand guard forever. Then, the world forgot about me. For more than two thousand years, I waited in the quiet darkness. The bright paint on my soldiers slowly faded away, and the wooden chariots crumbled into dust. I was a secret hidden beneath the fields of China, and nobody knew I was there.

Then one day, on March 29th, 1974, everything changed. Some farmers were digging a well to find water when their shovels hit something hard. It was the head of one of my soldiers. They were so surprised. Soon, experts called archaeologists came to see what they had found. They began to dig very carefully, brushing away the dirt. They couldn't believe their eyes when they uncovered me, a whole army standing in rows. It was like waking up from a very long sleep. Today, people visit me from all over the world. They walk above my pits and look down at my thousands of unique faces. They wonder about the powerful emperor I was made to protect. I am no longer a secret. I am a treasure that helps everyone see how amazing people were a long, long time ago.
