The story

The Adventures of Pinocchio

Before I was a famous book or a movie character, I was just an idea, a whisper of a story about a puppet carved from a special piece of wood. Can you imagine the smell of fresh ink and paper in a busy print shop in Florence, Italy, long ago? That’s where I first came to life. I wasn't born all at once. Instead, I appeared in pieces, like a puzzle. I was a serial story, published chapter by chapter in a magazine for children. Every week, kids all over Italy would eagerly await the next part of my tale, wondering what kind of trouble the mischievous little puppet who dreamed of being a real boy would get into next. I am the story that the world came to know as The Adventures of Pinocchio.

My creator was a thoughtful and imaginative writer named Carlo Lorenzini, but he used a special pen name: Carlo Collodi. He lived in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy, a place filled with art and stories. On July 7th, 1881, he dipped his pen in ink and wrote my very first chapter. It appeared in a popular children's magazine called 'Giornale per i bambini,' which means 'Newspaper for children.' He didn't call me Pinocchio at first. My original title was 'La storia di un burattino,' or 'The Story of a Marionette.' At the beginning, my story was much shorter, and believe it or not, it had a rather grim ending. But something amazing happened. The children who read about my adventures loved me so much. They sent letters to the magazine, begging for more. They didn't want my story to end. So, Carlo Collodi listened. He kept writing, giving me more challenges to face, more friends to meet, and more lessons to learn on my long journey.

After all my weekly adventures in the magazine were complete, my story was ready for a new beginning. In the year 1883, all my chapters were gathered together and bound between two covers. For the very first time, I became a real book. Now, children didn't have to wait a week to find out what happened next. They could read my entire story all at once. They could follow me from the very start, when the kind woodcarver Geppetto carved me from a piece of enchanted wood that could laugh and cry. They could journey with me to the tricky Land of Toys and see my brave rescue of Geppetto from the belly of the Terrible Dogfish. Through my mistakes, young readers learned that telling lies can have strange consequences, like making your nose grow longer and longer. But most importantly, I showed them that being brave, truthful, and unselfish is the path to becoming truly real. I was more than just a tale about a puppet; I was a story about growing up and learning what it means to be a good person.

My adventures didn't stay inside the borders of Italy for long. Soon, I was packed into suitcases and sailed on ships across the great oceans. My words were translated into hundreds of different languages, from English to Spanish to Japanese, so that children all over the world could read about my journey. My fame grew even bigger when, on February 7th, 1940, a brilliant filmmaker named Walt Disney created a beautiful animated movie about me. With magical songs and colorful drawings, he brought me to life on the giant movie screen. People could now see my nose grow and watch me dance with no strings. Today, my story continues to be told in countless books, plays, and new films. I hope I remind everyone, young and old, that no matter where you start—even as a simple piece of wood—you have the power to listen to your conscience, learn from your mistakes, and find the courage to be the very best version of yourself.
