The story

The Talking Book of Tales

Imagine the clip-clop of horse hooves on a road and the sound of happy chatter. I am not just one story, but a whole collection of them, tucked inside a book. My pages are filled with all sorts of friends on a big adventure together. There is a brave knight in shiny armor, a woman who loves to laugh, and a cook with yummy recipes. They are all walking to a special town, and I hold all their secrets and songs. I am The Canterbury Tales. I am a big, wonderful book full of friends.

A kind man with a twinkle in his eye created me a very long time ago. His name was Geoffrey Chaucer, and he loved to write. Between the years 1387 and 1400, he used a feather quill and a pot of ink to bring all my friends to life on my pages. Geoffrey imagined all these people going on a long trip, called a pilgrimage, to a town named Canterbury. To make the long walk more fun, he had them tell stories to each other. Geoffrey wrote down every single one, the silly ones and the exciting ones, so they would never be forgotten. He put them all safely inside me.

Before I came along, most books in England were in a language that not everyone could understand. But Geoffrey wrote my tales in the words that people used every day. This was so special. It meant that for the first time, almost anybody could listen to or read about the funny adventures of my friends. I am a reminder that we all have a story inside us, just waiting to be told. And when we share our stories, we become friends on a wonderful journey together, just like the pilgrims traveling inside my pages.
