Just want The Canterbury Tales?
Imagine a dusty road in old England, a long, long time ago. A group of people are traveling together on horseback, going on a special trip called a pilgrimage. The journey is long and can be a little boring, so to pass the time, they decide to tell stories. There are funny stories that make everyone giggle, brave stories about knights, and even silly stories about tricky animals. I am made of all those words and all that laughter. I am the whispers of their adventure and the pictures they painted with their tales. I am a very special book, and my name is The Canterbury Tales.
My creator was a man with a clever mind and a warm heart named Geoffrey Chaucer. He lived a very long time ago, and between the years 1387 and 1400, he brought me to life with his ink and quill. Geoffrey loved watching people. He saw knights in shiny armor, cooks with flour on their noses, and farmers who worked in the fields. He thought that everyone, no matter who they were, had an important story to tell. So, he had a brilliant idea. He imagined a group of pilgrims on their way to a town called Canterbury, and he decided they would have a storytelling contest to see who could tell the best tale. The most exciting part was that he wrote their stories down in English, the language that everyday people spoke. Back then, most important books were written in fancy languages that not everyone understood, so making me in English was a new and wonderful idea.
Geoffrey Chaucer worked very hard on me, but he had so many stories he wanted to include. Sadly, he passed away on October 25th, 1400, and he never got to finish all the tales he had planned. Even though I wasn't quite finished, people loved me. I became famous because I was one of the first big books written in English that everyone could enjoy. I am like a time machine made of paper. When you open my pages, you can hear the voices of people from hundreds of years ago. I show that every single person has a story worth sharing, and that telling our stories is a beautiful way to connect with each other, today and forever.
