The story

My Stage is Made of Water

Splash. A drum beats a deep, steady rhythm, like a happy heart. A flute sings a winding, joyful song. Look closely at the shimmering, murky water. It’s not just a pond—it’s my stage. Suddenly, a bright red dragon with a gaping mouth bursts from below the surface, sending sparkling drops everywhere. It twists and glides, chasing a golden phoenix as the music gets faster and faster. Can you imagine a theater where the actors are made of wood and the floor is made of water. That's me. I am a world of stories that floats, dives, and dances. In my home country of Vietnam, my name is Múa rối nước, which is a beautiful way of saying 'puppets that dance on water.' You can call me by my English name, Water Puppetry. I am a magical show born from the flooded fields of a faraway land, and I have so many secrets to share with you from beneath the waves.

My story didn't begin in a grand theater with velvet seats. It started nearly a thousand years ago, around the 11th century, in the wet, muddy rice paddies of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam. After the rice was harvested, the fields would flood with water from the monsoon rains. The farmers, who worked so hard all season, wanted a way to celebrate. They were clever and full of imagination. They thought, what if the water wasn't just for growing rice. What if it could be a stage for telling stories. And so, I was born. How do we know I'm really that old. Because a special stone was carved way back in the year 1121. It’s like my birth certificate. This stone carving tells all about a wonderful water puppet performance that was held for a king named Lý Nhân Tông. My puppets are made from a special kind of wood from fig trees, which is very light so it can float easily. Talented artists carve them into characters—farmers, princesses, brave heroes, and funny animals. Then, they paint me with many layers of shiny lacquer to make me waterproof. The real magic, though, comes from my secret friends: the puppeteers. They stand waist-deep in the water behind a painted bamboo screen, hidden from you. They use long bamboo poles and strings, all hidden under the water, to make my puppets come alive. It takes so much skill to make a wooden fisherman cast his net or a tiny boat paddle smoothly across the water. They are the hidden heroes of my every performance.

I don't just tell one kind of tale. I tell stories about everything that matters to the people who created me. Some of my favorite shows are about everyday village life. You might see little wooden farmers in straw hats carefully planting rice seedlings in a row, or a boy riding on the back of a water buffalo. You might even see a clever fox trying to sneak up on a flock of ducks, who always manage to get away with a loud quack and a splash. But I also tell grand myths and exciting legends that have been passed down for generations. One of the most famous is the story of the hero Lê Lợi. Legend says he was given a magical sword by a Dragon King to help free his people. After his victory, he was boating on a lake in the capital city when a giant Golden Turtle rose from the water to take the sword back. That lake is now called Hoàn Kiếm Lake, which means 'Lake of the Returned Sword.' All of my stories are brought to life by the sound of traditional Chèo theater music, with singers and musicians playing drums, flutes, and stringed instruments. The music is my heartbeat.

For hundreds and hundreds of years, I was a wonderful secret, known only to the people in the villages of northern Vietnam. Each village had its own team of puppeteers who would pass their secret skills from parents to children. My performances were special events that brought the whole community together around the village pond. But a secret this magical couldn't be kept forever. In the 20th century, people from the big cities realized how special I was. I packed my wooden puppets and bamboo poles and traveled from the quiet rice paddies to the bright stages of the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi. Soon, my fame spread even further. I traveled across oceans on airplanes, bringing my watery stage to countries all over the world, from France to Australia to America. People who had never even been to Vietnam could now watch a dragon chase a phoenix across the water. I am a flowing river of stories, connecting the past to the present and proving that a little bit of water and a whole lot of imagination can create magic that lasts for a thousand years.
