The story

My Big Adventure Across America

Hello there. My name is Meriwether Lewis, and I want to tell you about a big adventure. I had a very good friend named William Clark. We liked exploring. One day, our President, Thomas Jefferson, asked us to do a very important job. He wanted us to go on a long trip and explore a big, new part of the country. It was a secret mission to see all the amazing new lands, plants, and animals. We were so excited to pack our bags and go on a great adventure together.

On May 14th, 1804, our trip began. We got into a big boat with our friends and started rowing up a long, wiggly river. Every day, we saw something new and exciting. We saw funny little animals called prairie dogs that would pop their heads out of the ground to say hello. We saw big, fuzzy bears and tall birds. Along the way, we met a wonderful helper named Sacagawea. She was so kind and brave. She knew the land very well and helped us find safe paths. She also helped us find yummy berries and roots to eat and made new friends for us.

We traveled for a very, very long time, over tall mountains and across wide-open fields. Then, in November of 1805, we finally saw it. The big, shiny, wonderful Pacific Ocean. We had made it all the way across the country. We all cheered and felt so proud. Our long journey home ended on September 23rd, 1806. We brought back maps and stories of everything we saw. Our adventure helped everyone learn about the amazing country we live in, and I learned that exploring with good friends is the best adventure of all.
