Mona the Butterfly's Big Trip

Hello there. My name is Mona, and I am a monarch butterfly. My wings are so pretty. They are bright orange with black lines, like a little window. I love to flutter and fly all day long. I visit the sweet flowers and sip their yummy nectar. Flap, flap, flap go my wings. But today, I feel something different. The wind is a little chilly on my wings. The sun does not feel as warm. This is a special sign. It tells me and all my friends that it is time to go on a very, very long trip to a warm, sunny place for the winter.

It is time to go. I fly up, up, up into the big blue sky. Look. All of my butterfly friends are here too. There are so many of us. We look like a big, fluttering cloud of orange and black. Together, we fly south. We fly for many, many days. From way up high, the world looks so small. I can see tiny houses and green fields that look like a big blanket. The sun feels warm on my wings and helps me fly. Sometimes we get tired, but we keep going together. We are all flying to our special winter home, a place that is warm and safe. It is a very long journey, but we are brave and strong.

After flying for so long, we finally arrive. We are in a warm, magical forest in a place called Mexico. The trees here are very tall and green. They are called fir trees. I find a good spot on a branch and all my friends land beside me. We huddle close, close, close together on the trees. We look like big, orange leaves covering the branches. This helps us stay warm all winter long. We will rest here and take a long nap. When spring comes, we will fly again. You can help butterflies like me by planting lots of colorful flowers for us to visit on our journey.
