The Golden Age of the Tang Dynasty
Hello. My name is Li Shimin, but many people would later know me as Emperor Taizong. Long ago, the land I loved, which you know as China, was not one big, happy country. It was like a puzzle that had been dropped on the floor, with all the pieces scattered and fighting with one another. Each little kingdom had its own ruler, and they were always quarreling. My father, Li Yuan, had a big dream. He wanted to pick up all those puzzle pieces and put them together to make one beautiful picture of a strong and peaceful China. I believed in his dream with all my heart. I was a young man then, and I rode my favorite horse into many battles to help him. Together, we worked hard, and in the year 618, we started a new beginning for our home. We called it the Tang Dynasty.
After my father, it was my turn to lead. On September 4th, 626, I became the emperor. I was so excited. I didn't just want a peaceful land; I wanted it to be a wonderful and clever one too. We started by building our capital city, Chang'an. It was magnificent. Imagine a city with giant walls to keep everyone safe and huge gates that opened to wide, busy streets. The markets were my favorite part. They were bustling with people and filled with amazing things. Merchants traveled a long, long way on a special path called the Silk Road to bring us treasures. They brought fragrant spices that made our food delicious, beautiful glass in all the colors of the rainbow, and soft fabrics. But it wasn't just about buying and selling things. I believed that art and stories were treasures, too. I invited poets, painters, and thinkers to my court. We wrote poems about the moon and painted pictures of mountains and rivers. I wanted everyone, from the smallest child to the oldest grown-up, to have a chance to learn and create. This time of peace and creativity became known as a 'golden age'.
A ruler's job is to think about the future, to plant seeds for a garden that will bloom long after he is gone. My time as emperor lasted for many years, and I was proud of the peace we had built. Because people weren't busy fighting, they had time to think and invent amazing new things. One of the best inventions was a way to print books using carved wooden blocks. Before, books had to be copied by hand, which took a very long time. But with woodblock printing, we could make many copies of our stories and ideas for everyone to share. My story shows that when people come together and share their dreams and talents, they can build a world that is not only peaceful but also bright and full of wonders. That light from our Tang Dynasty shone for a long, long time, and I hope it inspires you to build beautiful things, too.
