Martin's Walk for Fairness
Hello there. My name is Martin Luther King Jr., and I want to tell you about a very important dream I had. I dreamed of a world where everyone was treated kindly and fairly, no matter what they looked like. In my country, some grown-ups were not allowed to do important things, like voting. Voting is how grown-ups help choose the leaders who make the rules for everyone. It wasn't fair that some people couldn't use their voice to help choose. I knew we had to do something to help change this and make things fair for all.
So, my friends and I planned a very special, long walk to show how much we cared. We walked from a town called Selma all the way to a city called Montgomery in a state called Alabama. So many people joined our walk. We held hands so we would all feel brave together, and we sang songs filled with hope to keep our hearts happy. It was a peaceful walk, which means we used our feet and our voices to share our big idea about fairness. We didn't shout or push; we just walked and sang together. Our long line of friends showed everyone that when people come together for a good reason, they can be very strong.
And you know what happened. The leaders of our country saw us walking together. They heard our songs and understood our message. A very important leader, the President, listened to us. On a wonderful day, August 6th, 1965, he helped make a new rule for the whole country. It was called the Voting Rights Act. This new rule made sure that every single grown-up could vote. It made my heart feel full of joy. I grew old and eventually passed away, but I always remembered our walk. It taught me that using our voices together in a peaceful way can make the world a better, fairer place for you, for me, and for everyone.
