Hello, I am a special day in Poland. My name is Wszystkich Świętych, which means All Saints' Day in English. I am a time when families come together to think about and remember their loved ones who are no longer with them. When people observe me, it is a very quiet and thoughtful day for everyone. It is a day filled with love, memory, and beautiful traditions that help people feel close to their family members who have passed away. My purpose is to give families a peaceful time to honor those they miss.
On my day, many families take a trip to visit cemeteries. This is a special place where people are laid to rest. The families work together to make the graves of their relatives look clean and beautiful. They might gently wipe away leaves or pull up little weeds. They bring lovely flowers to place on the graves. A very popular flower is the chrysanthemum, which comes in many bright and beautiful colors like yellow, red, and white. These flowers show that the people who are gone are still loved and remembered.
A very important part of my tradition is light. Families bring special candles to the cemetery. These candles are placed inside colorful glass jars called znicze. There are so many different kinds of znicze, in all sorts of shapes and colors. As the afternoon turns into evening and the sky grows dark, families light the wicks inside the jars. Soon, the whole cemetery is filled with the soft, flickering glow of thousands and thousands of candles. This sea of light creates a warm and peaceful feeling, making the whole place feel calm and beautiful in the darkness.
