The story

I Am Christmas

Hello, I am the holiday called Christmas. I am a very special day for Christians all around the world. For them, I am a time to celebrate the birth of a person they believe is the son of God, Jesus Christ. The story of this birth is an important part of my celebration. People often share the story by putting on plays. They also set up small displays called nativity scenes, which show the baby Jesus resting in a manger, a small bed used for animal feed, surrounded by his family and animals.

People observe me at the end of the year, on a fixed date. Most people celebrate me on December 25th. This date was chosen a very long time ago. The first records of my celebration on this day come from the year 336 in ancient Rome. This time of year was already important to many people. It is very close to the winter solstice, which is the day with the shortest amount of sunlight and the longest night of the year. For many, this marks a turning point when the days begin to grow longer again.

One of my most famous and beautiful traditions is the Christmas tree. This custom began in Germany hundreds of years ago. People there would bring evergreen trees, which stay green all winter, into their homes and decorate them. Over time, this tradition spread to other parts of the world. Today, many families who celebrate me find a special tree to put in their house. They hang shiny ornaments and colorful lights on the branches. To finish, they often place a bright star or an angel on the very top of the tree.

Giving and receiving presents is another popular way that people celebrate me. This tradition is connected to the Christian story of the birth of Jesus. In the story, three wise men traveled a long way to bring special gifts to the baby. My gift-giving custom is also linked to a real person named Saint Nicholas. He was known for being very kind and for giving secret gifts to people who needed help. The stories about him helped inspire the modern character of Santa Claus, who is said to bring gifts to children.

Today, I am celebrated by people all over the globe, and they observe me in many different ways. For some people, I am a deeply religious holiday, and they attend special church services to honor the day. For many others, I am a happy time to gather with family and friends. People sing special songs called carols, share a large, festive meal together, and enjoy each other's company. I am a day that can be about faith, family, and sharing kindness with others.
