Just want Easter - Ukrainian?
Hello! I am Velykden. That is the name people in Ukraine use for the Easter holiday. I am a happy time that happens in the spring, when the sun shines brighter and flowers begin to bloom. When people celebrate me, they are remembering the Christian story of Jesus and the beginning of new life. It is a time filled with joy and hope, just like when a tiny seed grows into a big, beautiful flower. My celebration welcomes the warm weather and the fresh start of the season.
One of my most famous and beautiful traditions is making colorful eggs called pysanky. They are not just any decorated eggs! First, people use a special tool and melted beeswax to draw amazing designs on a plain eggshell. It is like drawing a secret message with wax. Then, they dip the egg into bright dyes, like sunny yellow, grassy green, or sky blue. The wax covers parts of the egg so the color can’t touch it. After dipping it in many colors, the wax is gently melted away, and a wonderful, detailed pattern appears. Each pysanka is a little piece of art that is a symbol of spring.
On the morning of my celebration, families prepare special baskets. These are not ordinary baskets; they are filled with delicious foods that will be shared later. Inside, you might find a tall, sweet bread called paska, which is decorated with swirls. The beautiful pysanky eggs are also placed carefully inside. Families cover their baskets with a fancy cloth and take them to a church. At the church, the baskets are blessed. This is a very special moment for everyone.

After the blessing, families go home to share the food from their baskets. They have a big meal together, starting with a piece of the blessed egg. It is a happy feast that brings everyone together. I am a holiday about sharing, celebrating new life, and enjoying beautiful traditions that have been passed down for a very long time.
