Just want Easter - Ukrainian?
Hello! I am Ukrainian Easter. In the Ukrainian language, my name is Velykden, which means “Great Day.” For Ukrainian Christians, I am the most important and joyful holiday of the year. People celebrate me to remember a very important event in the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. My arrival is also a happy welcome to the season of spring, when the world wakes up after a long winter and everything feels new again.
The week before I arrive is a very busy and exciting time called Holy Week. Families spend these days getting ready for my celebration. One special day during this week is known as “Clean Thursday.” On this day, families work together to clean their homes from top to bottom, making sure everything is fresh and tidy for the holiday. It is also a time for baking. A delicious, tall, sweet bread called paska is made in kitchens that smell of warm yeast and sugar. These special loaves are often decorated with beautifully shaped ornaments made from dough, like crosses or birds.
One of my most famous and beautiful traditions is the art of making pysanky. These are not ordinary decorated eggs; they are true works of art. Pysanky are raw eggs that are carefully decorated with very detailed patterns. To create them, people use a special tool to draw designs with melted beeswax onto the eggshell. Then, the egg is dipped into colorful dyes. The wax protects the shell from the dye, and this process is repeated with different colors to create amazing patterns. Each symbol and color has a special meaning. A drawing of a bird might mean the coming of spring, while the color green can stand for new life and hope.

When Easter Sunday morning finally arrives, the celebrations begin. Families dress in their best clothes and carry special baskets to church. These baskets are filled with wonderful foods that have been prepared all week. Inside, you might find the decorated paska bread, the colorful pysanky eggs, creamy butter, sausage, and other treats. At the church, a priest blesses the baskets of food. After the service, everyone returns home for a wonderful feast. Sharing the blessed food with family is a happy way to celebrate and to break the long fast that came before me. It is a time of great joy, family, and togetherness.
