Hello! I am German Unity Day. In the German language, my name is 'Tag der Deutschen Einheit.' I am the national holiday for the country of Germany, which means I am a special day for the whole nation. People observe me every year on the same date, October 3rd. My date never changes, so it is easy for everyone to remember when my celebration will happen.
My purpose is to help people remember a very important time in their country's history. For many years, Germany was not a single, whole country. It was divided into two separate parts. One part was known as East Germany, and the other was called West Germany. This separation lasted for a long time, and it meant that families and friends were often kept apart from each other. But on my special date, October 3rd, in the year 1990, the two parts officially joined back together to become one single country again. This historic event is called German reunification, and it is the reason people celebrate me.
To understand why this reunification was such a big event, it helps to know about a famous wall. Before Germany was reunited, a long, tall concrete wall ran through the middle of the city of Berlin. It was called the Berlin Wall. This wall was a real barrier that kept people from East Germany and West Germany apart. People could not easily travel from one side to the other. The year before I was first celebrated, the Berlin Wall came down. This was a joyful moment when people were finally able to travel freely between the two parts of the city after many years of being separated.

Today, when my date arrives, people in Germany have a day off from work and school. This gives them time to celebrate together. Across the country, there are large public festivals with music, food stands, and special events for everyone to enjoy. One of my biggest traditions is an official celebration that is hosted by a different German city each year. This means the main party moves around the country! Many families spend the day together, enjoying parades, listening to concerts, or simply having a fun day out. I am a day for remembering an important moment and celebrating the country being whole.
