The story

Liberation Day - Dutch

Hello! I am Liberation Day. In the Netherlands, my name is Bevrijdingsdag. People observe me every year on the 5th of May. My purpose is to mark a very important moment in history. On this day in the year 1945, a long and difficult period called World War II finally came to an end for the Dutch people. After years of hardship, they were free again, and I was created to remember that feeling of relief and happiness.

My celebrations begin in a very special way, with a fire called the Liberation Flame. This flame is lit in a city called Wageningen. This is an important place because it is where the official papers were signed that ended the war in the Netherlands. Once the flame is lit, a wonderful tradition begins. Runners light their torches from this single fire. They then travel in teams to carry the light of the torches to towns and cities all across the country. It is a beautiful sight that shows how the light of freedom is shared with everyone.

Music and joy are a big part of my day. Many people head to big outdoor parties called Liberation Festivals. These festivals are free for everyone to attend, and there is one in every part of the Netherlands, so no one is left out. Famous musicians from the Netherlands perform on large stages. People dance and sing along, celebrating together. The sounds of happy music fill the air, reminding everyone of the joy that freedom brings.

As you walk through the streets on my day, you will see many signs of celebration. Dutch flags, with their stripes of red, white, and blue, fly proudly from houses, schools, and other buildings. In some towns, there are parades for people to watch. These parades sometimes include old army vehicles that were used to help free the country so long ago. Many families also gather to share a special meal together. They call it a 'Freedom Meal.' While they eat, they talk with one another about what it means to be free and why it is so important.

Today, I am a day for both looking back at the past and celebrating the present. I am a time to remember the struggles that people went through and to be thankful for the peace and freedom they have now. My celebrations come to a close in the evening with a very large, beautiful concert held on the Amstel river in the city of Amsterdam. This final event is a powerful reminder that freedom is a precious gift. It is something special that people must always work together to protect, not just in the Netherlands, but all over the world.
