Just want Our Lady of Aparecida - Brazilian?
Hello! I am the Feast Day of Our Lady of Aparecida, a very special day for many people in the country of Brazil. My story began a long, long time ago, back in the month of October in the year 1717. The story starts with three fishermen who were working on the Paraíba do Sul River. Their names were Domingos Garcia, João Alves, and Filipe Pedroso. They had been trying all day to catch fish for a special dinner, but their nets kept coming up empty. They were worried they would have nothing to bring back to their town.
As they tried one more time, they felt something heavy in their net. They slowly pulled it out of the water, but it wasn't a fish. It was a small statue of a woman, made from dark clay. The statue was broken, and it was missing its head. The fishermen decided to cast their nets into the river again in the same spot. When they pulled the net in this time, they found the statue's missing head! After they put the two pieces of the statue together in their boat, something amazing happened. They threw their nets in again, and this time, they pulled up so many fish that their small boat was completely full. Because the statue seemed to appear so magically, people started calling it 'Aparecida.' In the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil, this word means 'the one who appeared.'
Word of the beautiful statue and the fishermen’s good luck spread from village to village. Over many years, people would visit the statue to pray. It became a very important symbol for them. As more and more people came to see it, a small chapel was built, and then a larger one. The statue became famous throughout Brazil. In the year 1930, the Catholic Church gave Our Lady of Aparecida a very special title. She was named the 'Queen and Patroness of Brazil.' A patroness is like a special guardian or protector who watches over a place and its people. For many Brazilians, she became a symbol of hope and protection for their whole country.

Today, people observe my special day every year on October 12th. It is such an important day that it is a national holiday in Brazil, which means many people have the day off from work and school to celebrate. Millions of people make a special trip, called a pilgrimage, to the city of Aparecida. This is where the original clay statue is now kept inside a huge and beautiful church called a basilica. This basilica is one of the largest churches in the world. On my day, visitors attend special church services, join together in colorful parades, and celebrate with their families and friends. I am a day of faith, joy, and community for many people across Brazil.
