The Story of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Hello! I am the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I am a special day that people in Mexico, and many other places around the world, observe. My date is always the same each year: the 12th of December. When people gather for my observance, they are honoring a very important story. This story is about a man named Juan Diego and something amazing that is said to have happened to him a very long time ago, in the year 1531. My whole existence is dedicated to remembering this event, which took place in a part of Mexico that is now near a very large city.

The traditional story that people honor on my day begins on a place called Tepeyac Hill. According to the story, a man named Juan Diego was walking there when the Virgin Mary, who is known as the mother of Jesus in the Christian faith, appeared to him. The story says that she spoke to him with great kindness and asked for a church to be built on that very spot, so people could come and pray. To help him prove that her message was real, she gave him a special sign. She told him to gather roses in his cloak. This cloak was called a tilma, which is a simple piece of cloth worn by people at that time.

Juan Diego did as he was told and filled his tilma with beautiful roses. He then went to see an important church leader. When he stood before the leader, he opened his tilma to show him the flowers. As the roses tumbled out onto the floor, something incredible was revealed. A colorful, detailed picture of the Virgin Mary had appeared on the fabric of his simple cloak. This image was not painted by anyone; the story says it appeared as a miracle. It was the proof the church leader needed to believe Juan Diego’s message.

After the church leader and others saw the amazing image that was left on the tilma, they believed that Juan Diego was telling the truth about his vision. Following the request from the vision, a small church was built on Tepeyac Hill. This was the very first building created to honor this story. In the years that followed, my observance started to grow. More and more people heard the story of Juan Diego and the miraculous cloak. They traveled to the little church to see the special tilma for themselves and to pray, and my traditions began to take shape.

Today, people observe me with great happiness and devotion. My main celebration takes place in Mexico City at a very large and beautiful church called the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is where the original tilma of Juan Diego is kept safe for everyone to see. On December 12th, millions of people travel to this basilica. Some walk for many days to get there. During my observance, people attend special church services. They also sing a beautiful song called "Las Mañanitas" to honor Mary, and they bring her wonderful gifts, especially bouquets of colorful flowers.

My celebrations are full of life, color, and sound. In many towns and cities, you can see lively parades moving through the streets. At night, the sky might be lit up with bright fireworks. There are also special performances by dancers who wear amazing costumes with bright colors and feathers. Families gather to share festive meals. A favorite treat is a sweet, crispy pastry called a buñuelo. Many children also get to dress up in traditional clothing to honor Juan Diego and the culture of Mexico. For all who observe me, I am a day of faith, community, and joyful celebration.
