The story

Aryabhata's Spinning World

Hello. My name is Aryabhata. A very long, long time ago, I lived in a place called India. My favorite thing to do was look up at the big, dark night sky. I saw so many twinkling stars that blinked at me. I saw the big, bright moon shining down. The sky was so beautiful. It made me feel full of wonder. It made me ask lots of questions about our amazing world and everything that sparkled up above me.

Back then, people thought the shiny stars moved all around us while our world, the Earth, stood still. But I had a big, new idea. In the year 499 CE, I shared my thought that the Earth is not flat. I believed it was round like a ball. And I thought it spins around and around, just like a little toy top. Whee. I also loved numbers very much. Numbers helped me understand things, and I even found a special number that helps us learn all about circles.

My ideas about our spinning, round world helped other people learn, too. They started to understand more about our home and all the stars in the sky. It is so important to be curious and ask big questions. Always keep looking up at the sky with wonder, just like I did. You never know what new and exciting things you might discover. The world is full of amazing secrets waiting for you to find them.
