Just want Autogyro?
Hello there. My name is the Autogyro, and I am a very special flying machine. Imagine if an airplane and a helicopter had a baby, that would be me. I have wings like an airplane and a big rotor on top that spins, just like a helicopter. My story begins with a very clever and caring man named Juan de la Cierva. He loved to design airplanes, but one day in 1919, something sad happened. A plane he built crashed because it was flying too slowly. This made Juan very determined. He said, “I will invent a flying machine that is safe, one that won’t fall if it slows down.” He wanted to make sure flying was safe for everyone, and that is how the idea for me was born.
Juan de la Cierva was always looking for great ideas. One day, he watched big windmills spinning slowly in the breeze, and a wonderful thought popped into his head. He imagined an airplane with giant blades on top, like a windmill or a pinwheel, that could spin freely in the wind. These spinning blades would always be creating lift, which is the magic that keeps flying machines in the air. This would make me much safer. But learning to fly wasn't easy. My first brothers were a little wobbly. They would hop into the air and then tip right over. Juan never gave up, though. He studied and worked and discovered a secret. My blades needed to be able to flap up and down a little, just like a bird’s wings. That was the trick. Finally, the big day came. On January 9th, 1923, in Madrid, Spain, my best version, the C.4, was ready. It flew perfectly. I soared through the air, steady and safe. It was the most amazing feeling in the world.

After I showed everyone how well I could fly, I became quite useful. For a while, I had important jobs like delivering mail to faraway places and helping people take amazing pictures of the ground from way up high. But my biggest and most important job was to be an inspiration. You see, all of the smart ideas Juan used to build me, especially my spinning rotor blades, helped other inventors figure out how to create the helicopter. So even though you might not see many Autogyros flying around today, my spinning spirit is still up in the sky. Every time a helicopter takes off to rescue someone or help people, a little piece of my story is flying with it. I showed the world a new and safer way to fly, and I am very proud of that.
