The story

I Am a Caravel

Hello there. I am a special kind of boat. My name is the Caravel. I was born in a warm, sunny place called Portugal a very long time ago. I am made of strong wood and I love to float on the big, blue water. Before I came along, other boats had a tricky time going on adventures. They could only go where the wind pushed them from behind. But I am different. I have a secret that helps me sail in a whole new way, and I was so excited to show everyone what I could do.

My big secret is my sails. Look up. Can you see them. They are shaped like triangles. Clever builders in Portugal made me with these special sails way back in the 1400s. Most boats had big square sails, but my triangle sails were much better at catching the wind. Even if the wind blew from the side, I could catch it. I could zigzag through the water. Whee. This way. Whoosh. That way. This meant that sailors did not have to wait for the wind to be perfect. With me, any day could be a good day for an adventure on the sea.

Because I could sail so well, brave sailors took me on amazing trips. We sailed farther than other boats had ever gone before. We sailed along the big coast of Africa and saw so many new things. I helped people from different parts of the world meet each other for the first time. They shared yummy food and told happy stories. It made me feel proud to help new friends say hello. I helped our big world feel a little smaller and friendlier. Even today, boats still help us explore and share our amazing planet.
