The Story of the Clothes Dryer

Hello there. I am a Clothes Dryer. I love to tumble and spin. Round and round I go. I make your clothes feel warm and soft, like a big, cozy hug. Swish, swoosh, tumble, tumble. It is my favorite thing to do. Before I was here, things were very different. When your clothes were wet, they had to hang outside on a long line to dry. But what if it was a rainy day? Plip, plop. Oh no. The clothes would get all wet again. On cold days, they would feel icy and stiff. Brrr. It was hard to get warm, dry clothes when the weather was not sunny and bright.

A long, long time ago, a very clever man named George T. Sampson had a wonderful idea. It was on a special day, June 7th, 1892. He thought about all the wet clothes on rainy days and wanted to help. So, he invented my very first ancestor. I was not a big spinning machine back then. I was a special metal frame where you could hang your socks, shirts, and pants. Then, you would place me near a warm stove. The heat from the stove would gently kiss the clothes and make them dry. It was a brilliant idea. Now, families could have dry clothes even when it was cloudy and gray outside. I was the beginning of drying clothes inside, safe and sound.

Today, I am your big, tumbling friend in the laundry room. I still have the same wonderful job. I spin your clothes around and around with warm, gentle air until they are perfectly dry and fluffy. I love helping your family have fresh, clean clothes anytime you need them. My purpose is to make sure you always have a warm shirt or cozy pajamas ready to wear. I am happy knowing I help you get ready to go outside and play.
