Just want Pottery?
Hello there. My name is Pottery, but I wasn't always so strong and useful. I started my life as a humble lump of squishy, gooey clay, just simple mud from the riverbank. A very long, long time ago, before there were towns or even farms, people had a big problem. They needed to carry water home from the streams, but it was so tricky. They also wanted to keep their yummy berries and crunchy seeds safe from hungry little mice and crawling bugs. They tried their best. They would use big, waxy leaves, but the water would dribble right through their fingers. They wove baskets from grass, but the seeds would fall out and the critters would sneak right in. I knew I could help. I was the answer they were looking for, waiting patiently in the mud.
Then came the most exciting part of my story. The part with fire. Thousands and thousands of years ago, a very clever person was sitting by their warm campfire. They noticed something amazing. The clay on the ground near the fire wasn't soft and muddy anymore. It was hard like a rock. This gave them a brilliant idea. I remember it so clearly. Someone scooped up a piece of me and began to pinch and roll and smooth me into the shape of a bowl. It tickled a little. This first happened in a place we now call China, almost 20,000 years ago. After I was shaped, they did the bravest thing. They put me into the hot, glowing embers of the fire. I said, “I can be strong for you.”. The fire was so hot, but it didn't hurt me. It worked like magic. When they pulled me out, I was completely changed. I was no longer soft goop. I had transformed. I was now a sturdy, waterproof pot, ready to hold anything.
I Am Pottery: A Story from the Clay

I changed the world in my own special way. With me around to help, families could finally store extra grain and dried fruit for many days. They could carry lots of water back to their homes without spilling a drop. This was a very big deal. It meant they didn't have to search for food and water every single day. They could stay in one place and build cozy villages. They even started to plant seeds and grow their own gardens because they knew they could store what they grew. I also became a way for them to share their stories. People started to paint beautiful decorations on me, like zig-zags, dots, and pictures of animals. Even today, I am still helping you. I am the mug you drink from, the plate you eat on, and the bowl that holds your soup. And it all started with a simple lump of clay, a little bit of water, and one bright idea.
