The story

I Am a Boat

Hello. I am a boat. But I wasn't always a boat. First, I was just a log floating in the river. Splash. Swish. I would bob up and down in the cool water. I watched the happy people and friendly animals playing on the shore. They wanted to see what was on the other side of the big, wide river. But the water was too deep to walk across. They looked sad that they could not go explore the other side. I wished I could help them get across the shiny, blue water to see new things.

Then one day, a long, long, long time ago, around the year 8000 BCE, a very clever person saw me floating. They had a brand new idea. They took a big log just like me and started to scoop out my middle. Scoop, scoop, scoop. They made me hollow inside so there was a cozy spot to sit. Now, I was not just a log. I was a canoe. I felt so excited and happy. For the very first time, a person climbed inside me. I rocked gently side to side in the water, holding them safe and dry. We floated all the way across the river together. Whee. I helped them get to the other side. I was so proud to carry my new friend.

That was just the beginning of my big adventure. Soon, people tied many logs together to make me bigger. I became a raft that could carry lots of friends at once. Then, a long time ago in a sunny place called Egypt, around the year 4000 BCE, people gave me a big blanket called a sail. Whoosh. The wind pushed my sail and helped me go faster across the water. I grew bigger and bigger. Now I am a giant ship that sails on the big, blue ocean. I carry yummy food, fun toys, and happy families all over the world. I help everyone visit new places and share smiles.
