The Story of the Steamboat

Toot! Toot! Hello there. I am a Steamboat. I am a special kind of boat. I don’t need sails to catch the wind. I don’t need people to paddle me with oars. I have big, round paddlewheels on my sides. They go splish-splash in the water to push me along. I also have a tall smokestack. It puffs out fluffy white clouds of steam. Hoooooosh. Before I came along, it was very, very slow for boats to go up a river. They had to work so hard against the water. But I had a secret power to help them.

A very smart man named Robert Fulton made me. In the year 1807, he had a big, bright idea. He saw how steam could make things move and thought it could make a boat move too. So, he built me. My first name was the Clermont. I was so excited for my first big trip. On August 17th, 1807, I chugged onto the big Hudson River in a place called New York. Chugga-chugga-chug. People on the land stopped and stared. They had never seen a boat move all by itself. They were so surprised. But I did it. I puffed my steam and splashed my wheels and chugged right up the river. It was a wonderful day.

After my first trip, I showed everyone how helpful I could be. I could carry people and boxes up the river much faster than any other boat. I was like a floating bus for friends and families. I was also like a floating delivery truck, bringing letters and toys to different towns. I helped people visit each other more easily and made the big world feel a little smaller. My chugging steam engine was just the start. Because of my idea, people built even bigger and stronger ships that now sail across the whole wide ocean. Toot! Toot!
