The story

Amun-Ra and the Journey of the Sun

Hello, I am Amun-Ra, and my story begins in the quiet dark. Long ago, before there were mountains or rivers, before people or animals, there was only a great, silent water called Nun. It was endless and still. But then, a beautiful lotus flower pushed its way to the surface and bloomed, and sitting inside was me, a golden child ready to create the world. With my very first breath, I made the wind to stir the air, and with my first thought, I began to shape everything you see. I created the earth to stand on and the sky to stretch above it. The people who lived along the mighty Nile River in Egypt told this story to their children, a tale they called the Creation of the World by Amun-Ra. They saw my work every morning as the sun began to glow in the east, and they knew a new day, full of my light and warmth, had begun.

Every day, I have a very important job. When the rooster crows, I climb aboard my magnificent sun boat, the Mandjet, and I begin my sail across the big blue sky. My boat glides over the heavens like a golden swan on a peaceful lake. As I travel, I shine my light down on the earth, helping the green crops grow tall in the fields and warming the golden sands of the desert. The children of Egypt would look up and see me, a bright, powerful star moving from one side of the world to the other. They knew I was watching over them, making sure their world was safe and bright. But when evening comes, my journey isn't over. I must switch to my night boat, the Mesektet, and sail through the dark world below, the underworld. It is a mysterious and shadowy place, where I must face the great serpent of darkness, Apep. He is a slithery beast who hates the light and tries to swallow my boat whole to stop me. But I am always stronger. I must defeat him every single night so I can return to the sky and bring a new morning to the world. The great kings and queens, the pharaohs, built magnificent temples to honor me, with giant pillars that reached toward the sky, showing their love and thanks for my daily victory.

My daily journey was a promise to the Egyptian people: a promise that light would always return after darkness, and that every single day is a fresh start. They carved and painted my story on the tall walls of their temples and deep inside their tombs, showing me with the head of a falcon and a shining sun disc over my head. These amazing pictures are still there today, thousands of years later, and people travel from all over the world just to see them. My story reminds everyone that even when things seem dark or you are scared, there is always hope for a new sunrise. It teaches us that we all have a light inside of us, a power to be brave and bright, just like the sun. So whenever you see the sun, remember my story and the endless cycle of new beginnings that it represents for everyone.
