Just want Dragon King?
From my throne of coral in my palace of shimmering crystal, I can feel the world breathe. My name is Ao Guang, and I am the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea. Down here, in the silent, swirling depths, my kingdom is a world of breathtaking wonder. Can you imagine gates carved from a single, enormous pearl, glowing with an inner light? Or gardens where luminous sea-kelp sways, casting a gentle green glow on everything? Schools of sapphire-blue fish move like living clouds through my grand halls, their scales catching the light like a thousand tiny jewels. My loyal crab generals and shrimp soldiers stand guard, their shells polished to a brilliant shine, ready to defend the peace of my domain. For countless centuries, my sacred duty has been to guard these waters, to command the tides, and to keep the delicate balance between the ocean and the sky. But my connection extends far beyond the waves. I can hear the whispers of the people on the land, their joys and their sorrows carried on the wind and down into my watery realm. Lately, their whispers have turned to desperate, sorrowful cries, and I feel a great sadness growing in the world above, a thirst that even I can feel in my very soul. This is the story of how that sadness called to me, the myth of the Dragon King.
The sorrow I sensed was a terrible one: a drought. For months, not a single drop of rain had fallen from the heavens. The sun beat down relentlessly, cracking the earth into a parched, dusty mosaic. Rivers had shrunk to muddy trickles, and the vibrant green fields had withered into brittle shades of brown. I could hear the desperate prayers of the farmers and the quiet weeping of their children. Their suffering resonated deep within me, a painful echo in my ancient heart. I could not sit on my throne and listen to their plight any longer. I had to act. Rising from my throne, I felt a powerful energy surge through me. My regal, human-like form began to shift and stretch, a magnificent and ancient transformation taking hold. My robes dissolved into a cascade of shimmering, jade-green scales, each one harder than diamond. My hands and feet sharpened into formidable claws, and my face elongated into the noble snout of a dragon, with whiskers as fine as silver threads and eyes that flashed with the raw power of lightning. With a tremendous heave, I burst from the surface of the Eastern Sea in a colossal explosion of foam and water. I was no longer a king in a palace; I was the storm itself. I coiled my immense, serpentine body and soared into the sky, a majestic creature weaving between the stark white clouds. The air was hot and still, but I brought the cool, damp breath of the ocean with me. I called upon the moisture from my vast domain, gathering the vapors into a swirling mass of dark, heavy storm clouds that blotted out the cruel sun. The world below fell into a dramatic twilight. Then, with a mighty roar that sounded like the sky itself was splitting apart, a roar of thunder that shook the very mountains, I commanded the rain to fall. And it did.

From my vantage point high among the clouds, I watched as the life-giving water cascaded down. The thirsty earth drank deeply, and the scent of rain on dry soil—a smell of pure relief—rose to meet me. Rivers began to flow once more, and a vibrant green blush returned to the fields. The joyful shouts of the people were the sweetest music I had ever heard. This is why, for thousands of years, people across the land of China built beautiful temples near rivers and coastlines to honor me and my brothers, the Dragon Kings of the other three seas. They held festivals and made offerings, not out of fear, but out of respect for nature and in thanks for the gift of rain. Because of this, the dragon became a powerful and beloved symbol of luck, strength, and goodness in Chinese culture. My story lives on, not just in ancient texts, but in the vibrant dragon dances during Lunar New Year and in the art and imagination of people everywhere, reminding us that the oldest stories still have the power to make us look at the world with wonder.
