The story

King Laurin and the Mountain Roses

High in the jagged peaks of the mountains, where the clouds drift like soft sheep, I once had a garden so beautiful it shimmered. Hello. My name is Laurin, and I am the king of the dwarves. My kingdom is hidden deep inside the mountains, full of sparkling gems, but my greatest treasure was my garden of glowing roses, which is why people tell the story of King Laurin's Rose Garden. King Laurin was a small but powerful dwarf king who lived in a crystal palace beneath the mountains we now call the Dolomites. His most prized possession was a magnificent garden of red roses that bloomed all year round. To protect his secret garden from the outside world, he surrounded it with a single, magical silk thread that was as strong as any wall.

One day, a human hero named Dietrich von Bern heard that the lovely Princess Simhild was with King Laurin. He and his knights rode up the mountains to find her. They saw the incredible rose garden and, without asking for permission, rode right through the magical silk thread, trampling the beautiful flowers under their horses' hooves. King Laurin was furious. Though he was small, he wore a magic belt that gave him the strength of twelve men and a special cap that could make him invisible. He stomped out of his palace and challenged Dietrich to a great tussle to protect his home. Laurin was strong and quick, zipping around unseen. But Dietrich was clever. Instead of trying to see the king, he watched the blades of grass. When he saw them moving, he knew the invisible king was there and managed to grab his magic belt. Without his belt, Laurin lost his super strength and was captured by the knights.

As Dietrich and his men led King Laurin away, the dwarf king looked back at his beloved garden. His heart broke with sadness and anger. He felt his beautiful roses had betrayed him by showing the humans where to find his kingdom. In his sorrow, he decided to cast a powerful spell so no one could ever see them again. 'You will never be seen again.' he shouted at the roses. 'Not by the light of day, nor by the dark of night.' He wanted his garden to disappear forever, hidden from everyone's eyes. But in his haste and his sadness, King Laurin forgot about the two magical times in between day and night: the gentle twilight of dawn and the soft glow of dusk. His spell did not include them.

The legend of King Laurin's Rose Garden explains a real-life wonder. People who live near the Dolomite mountains created this story to describe the breathtaking sight when the mountain peaks glow with a fiery pink and orange light at sunrise and sunset. This beautiful event is called 'Alpenglow,' or 'Enrosadira' in the local language, which means 'turning pink.' The myth has inspired paintings, poems, and songs for hundreds of years. It reminds us that even in a story of anger and sadness, something beautiful can remain. It encourages us to look for the magic hidden in the world, especially in the quiet moments between day and night.
