The story

The Dance of La Pincoya

Do you hear the ocean whisper a song? That is the sound of the cool, blue water. Deep down in the water lives someone very special whose name is La Pincoya, and she lives near the pretty islands of Chiloé. This is the story of her magical dance, the legend of La Pincoya.

La Pincoya watches over all the fish and all the little crabs, making sure they are safe and happy. When the fishermen get in their little boats, they look for her. La Pincoya loves to dance on the shore. She twirls and leaps on the sand, and her long, dark hair flies in the salty wind. Her dance is a secret message. If she faces the sparkling sea while she dances, it means, 'Hooray! There will be so many fish today!' The fishermen smile because they know their nets will be full. But if she turns her back to the water and dances facing the land, it is a sign that the fish need to rest. It tells the fishermen to be patient and try again another day.

Her dance helps everyone remember to be kind to the ocean. The people of Chiloé tell this story to their children. They have told it for a very, very long time. The story teaches them to love the big, blue sea. When children hear the story of La Pincoya, they remember the ocean is a home for many friends. It is a happy story about dancing with the wonderful sea.
