Just want La Pincoya - Chilote?
Do you hear that? It’s the sound of waves whispering secrets to the shore. I live where the mist curls over the cool, green water, among the islands of southern Chile. My name is La Pincoya, and the sea is my home and my heart. My long, dark hair flows like seaweed, and the ocean sings its songs through me. For as long as anyone can remember, the fishermen who live here have looked to the coastline, hoping to see me. They know that my dance holds the key to the ocean’s treasures. This is the story of La Pincoya, and how the sea shares its magic.
My father is the great Millalobo, the golden king of the sea, and my mother, Huenchula, was a human who loved the ocean as much as I do. From them, I learned the language of the tides and the moods of the water. When the sea is feeling generous, I come to the shore. I wear a dress woven from shimmering seaweed, and I begin to dance. If I dance with my face to the waves, lifting my arms to the open water, it is a sign of good fortune! The fishermen smile, knowing their nets will soon be full of fish. But sometimes, the sea needs to rest. On those days, I dance facing the hills, with my back to the water. This is my signal that the fish will be scarce, and it is a time to be patient. My dance is a promise and a warning. It reminds the good people of the islands to take only what they need and to always be thankful for the sea’s gifts. They know that if they care for the ocean, the ocean will care for them.
When the fishermen listen to my dance, there is a happy balance. The families have food to eat, and the fish have time to thrive in the deep, peaceful waters. The story of my dance has been passed down from grandparents to grandchildren for hundreds of years, told in cozy kitchens while the rain patters on the roof. It is more than just a tale; it is a reminder that the ocean is alive and full of wonder. Today, people still paint pictures of my dance and sing songs about the girl with seaweed in her hair. My story helps everyone remember that we are all connected to the sea, and its beautiful, mysterious heart keeps the world spinning.
