The story

Nasreddin Hodja and the Center of the World

My old, patched turban is perched on my head, and the sun of Akşehir warms my back as I ride my faithful donkey, who always seems to be walking backward. You might have heard of me; my name is Nasreddin Hodja. Some people in the village square whisper that I’m a fool, while others call me a wise man. To be honest, I think I am a little bit of both. Life is a funny puzzle, and sometimes the most foolish-looking answer is the wisest one of all. One bright afternoon, a man with a very important-looking coat and a very serious face stopped me right in the middle of the market. He wanted to test my wisdom with a question he thought no one could possibly answer. This is the story of how I showed him the answer was right under his nose, or rather, under my donkey’s hoof. It’s a tale people call 'The Center of the World'.

The market buzzed with the sound of merchants selling figs and weavers showing off colorful carpets. But when the serious man spoke, his voice boomed over the chatter. 'Hodja!' he announced, puffing out his chest. 'You travel everywhere on that strange donkey of yours. You have seen the world, and people say you carry great knowledge in that turbaned head. So, tell us all: where is the exact center of the world?' A hush fell over the crowd. Children stopped their games, and the baker paused with a loaf of bread halfway to his oven. Everyone leaned in, curious to see how I would get out of this one. The man smiled, thinking he had finally stumped me. Answering was impossible. How could anyone know where the very middle of the whole, wide Earth was? My donkey flicked his ears, not bothered at all. I stroked his neck, took a deep breath, and felt a little smile tug at my beard. The man expected a map, a star chart, or a long, complicated explanation. I decided to give him something much simpler.

I calmly dismounted from my donkey. The dust swirled around my slippers. I looked the man right in the eye, then pointed a finger not to the sky or to a faraway mountain, but straight down at the ground. 'The exact center of the world,' I said with great confidence, 'is right here, under my donkey’s front right hoof.' The crowd gasped. Some people started to giggle. The serious man’s face turned red with frustration. 'That’s ridiculous!' he sputtered. 'How can you possibly know that? Prove it!' I shrugged my shoulders and gave him my most pleasant smile. 'Ah, but it is you who must prove me wrong,' I replied. 'If you do not believe me, then please, take your ropes and your measuring sticks. Start here, and measure the entire world in every direction—north, south, east, and west. If your measurements show that I am off by even a single inch, I will admit I am wrong.' The man stood there with his mouth open. The crowd understood my little joke. How could he possibly measure the whole world? The task was impossible, which was exactly my point. The giggles in the crowd turned into loud, hearty laughter. The man, realizing he had been outsmarted by the simplest answer, quietly shuffled away.

My stories, like that one, have been traveling from village to village for over 700 years, carried on the winds across Turkey, the Balkans, and along the old Silk Road. They are not just silly tales about a man and his donkey. They are little lessons wrapped in a smile, reminding us that sometimes the most complicated questions have the simplest answers. They teach us to think in new ways, to not be afraid of looking foolish, and to understand that wisdom isn't always found in thick books but in how we see the world around us. Your own spot in the world is its center. Today, my stories are told to children by their grandparents, they are drawn in colorful comic books, and actors perform them in plays, still making people laugh and think. These tales are a bridge across time, connecting you to the past and showing that a little bit of humor and a clever thought can solve almost any problem. And that is a kind of magic that never gets old.
