The story

Sky Woman and Turtle Island

There once was a woman named Sky Woman. She lived in a beautiful world high, high up in the sky. It floated like a fluffy white cloud. In her world was a big, bright tree. The tree had glowing flowers that shone like little lights for everyone. One day, Sky Woman saw a hole by the tree's big roots. She looked down, down, down. Far below, she saw only dark water that swirled and swirled. Then, whoosh! Sky Woman began to fall. This was the start of the great story of Sky Woman.

Down, down, down she went. She floated like a little leaf spinning in the air. The birds in the water saw her coming from the sky. 'Look!' they chirped. 'Someone is coming!' Two big swans with soft, white wings saw her. Flap, flap, flap went their wings. They flew up high to meet her. The swans caught her gently and carried her down to the water. They brought Sky Woman to the Great Turtle. He was very big and very strong. He offered his big shell back for her to rest on. All the animals wanted to help. They needed to find some earth from the very bottom of the water. A duck tried and a beaver tried, but it was too deep. Then, a little muskrat took a big breath. He dove deep, deep, deep into the water. He came back up with a tiny bit of mud in his paw and put it right on the turtle's back.

The little bit of mud began to grow. It grew bigger and bigger. It grew and it grew until it spread all over the Great Turtle's big back. Soon, it became land. There were green fields and tall forests. This wonderful new land was called Turtle Island. Sky Woman stepped onto the new earth. She carried special seeds from the Sky World. She planted the seeds, and they grew into plants and trees. The story of Sky Woman teaches us to be kind. It shows that everyone can help, even someone very small. When we work together, we can make a beautiful world for everyone.
