The story

The Creation of Turtle Island

My world was once a place of soft light, high above the one you know. I am called Sky Woman, and I lived in a vibrant land in the sky where a great, glowing tree grew, illuminating everything with its gentle warmth and providing food for everyone. Its branches reached out like welcoming arms, and its roots ran deep into the celestial soil. But my life changed forever on one fateful day. My husband, the chief of the Sky World, had a powerful dream that the tree must be uprooted to bring a great change. With heavy hearts, the people of my world worked together and pushed the magnificent tree over, leaving a vast, dark hole in the floor of our world, like a window into an unknown place. I was filled with an irresistible curiosity and crept to the edge to peer into the blackness. Can you imagine seeing an endless, dark space where the ground should be? As I leaned over, the edge crumbled beneath my feet, and I lost my balance, tumbling down, down, down through the emptiness. As I fell, I instinctively clutched at the air and my hands closed around a handful of seeds and roots from the branches of the great tree. This is the beginning of the story of how your world came to be, the story of the Creation of Turtle Island.

As I fell through the vast, silent darkness, I saw a new world below me, but it was made of nothing but water. A huge, shimmering ocean stretched as far as my eyes could see, with no land in sight. The animals living in the water looked up and saw me, a strange being falling from the sky. They knew they had to help. “A being is falling toward us!” cried a loon. “We must catch her!”. Without hesitation, two graceful swans flew up to meet me. Their powerful wings beat against the air, creating a soft cushion that caught me and gently lowered me down toward the water's surface. But where could I stand? I could not live in the water. The animals quickly held a council to solve this problem. “She needs solid ground to rest upon,” said a wise beaver. It was then that the Great Turtle, ancient and enormous, spoke with a deep, rumbling voice. “I will help. She can rest upon my back.” He rose from the depths, his shell like a sturdy, floating island in the endless sea. I was safe, but I needed earth to plant the precious seeds I still held in my hand. One by one, the animals bravely tried to dive to the bottom of the great water to bring up soil. The swift otter tried and failed. The strong beaver dove deep, but the pressure pushed him back. Finally, the small, humble muskrat spoke up. “I will try,” he said quietly. He took a deep breath and dove deep, deeper than any other, and was gone for a very long time. When he finally floated back to the surface, he had given his life for his effort, but clutched in his tiny paw was a small bit of precious earth.

With tears of gratitude in my eyes, I took the small clump of earth from the muskrat's paw. I placed it carefully in the center of the Great Turtle's wide, strong back. To make it grow, I began to walk in a circle around it, in the same direction that the sun travels across the sky. As I walked and sang songs of creation, a miracle happened. The small bit of earth began to grow and expand, spreading wider and wider over the turtle's shell until it became the vast continent you know today. On this new land, I planted the seeds I had brought from the Sky World. From them grew the first sweetgrass, tobacco, corn, beans, and squash, along with all the trees and medicines of the world. In time, I gave birth to a daughter. She grew and eventually had twin sons who would shape the new world in different ways—one creating the beautiful, gentle things like flowers and deer, and the other creating the challenging things, like thorns and predators. Together, they brought balance to the world. This story is more than just a tale; it is a teaching passed down through generations of the Haudenosaunee people. It teaches us about courage, cooperation, and the importance of every creature, no matter how small. The muskrat's sacrifice shows that even the humblest among us can achieve great things, and the Great Turtle's gift reminds us to be strong and supportive. This myth reminds us that the world is a gift, created from teamwork and kindness, a story that still sparks wonder and reminds us to care for the land that supports us all.
