My name is Mỵ Nương, and from the grand palace of my father, the 18th Hùng King, I watched the world bloom. Our kingdom of Văn Lang was a land of misty mountains and emerald rice paddies, a place of deep peace. But that peace was about to be challenged by a love as powerful as the earth and as wild as the sea. When I came of age, my father declared that only the most extraordinary suitor could win my hand, and soon, two arrived who were more than mortal. This is the story of that contest, the legend of Sơn Tinh and Thủy Tinh. The first was Sơn Tinh, the Lord of the Tản Viên Mountain. He was calm and strong, with a presence that felt as ancient and steadfast as the mountains themselves. He spoke of the forest's secrets and the earth's riches, his voice a steady rumble that was both comforting and powerful. He represented the stability and bounty of the land. The second was Thủy Tinh, the Lord of the Eastern Sea. He was dynamic and powerful, his eyes holding the depth and mystery of the ocean. His voice was the crash of waves against the shore, full of passion and untamed energy. He promised me treasures from the deepest parts of the world, wonders no mortal had ever seen. My father was torn, for how could one choose between the mountain and the sea? Each suitor was magnificent, and each held a power essential to our kingdom. To be fair, he devised a challenge, a quest for wedding gifts so rare they seemed impossible to find. He believed the gods would show their favor through this test, revealing who was truly destined to be my husband and a protector of our people. The tension in the court was as thick as the morning fog on the river.
The Legend of Sơn Tinh and Thủy Tinh

The challenge was announced at dawn on October 1st. The first suitor to bring a nine-tusked elephant, a nine-spurred rooster, and a nine-maned horse would become my husband. These were not ordinary animals; they were creatures of legend, symbols of our land's sacred magic, and finding them would require a true connection to the earth. I watched from my balcony, my heart a mix of anxiety and wonder. Thủy Tinh, confident in his power, laughed loudly. “Such trifles are of the land,” he boomed. “But my reach is endless.” He dove back into his ocean domain, sending his watery minions—creatures of coral and current—to search distant shores and forgotten islands. But his kingdom was one of salt and sand; he knew little of the hidden forests and high peaks where such creatures might live. Sơn Tinh, however, simply smiled. The mountains were his home. He knew every path, every hidden valley, every ancient tree. He didn’t need to search; he only needed to ask. He called to the forest, and the forest answered his call. Within a day, he returned. Before the palace stood a magnificent elephant with nine ivory tusks gleaming in the sun, a proud rooster with nine sharp spurs on each leg that glinted like polished jade, and a horse whose mane flowed like nine shimmering waterfalls. My father was overjoyed. Sơn Tinh had proven his mastery over the land and his worthiness. A grand wedding was held, and I left with my new husband for his mountain home, feeling safe in his quiet strength. But as we ascended the mountain paths, I felt a tremor in the air and heard a distant, angry roar. Thủy Tinh had returned, and he was bringing the full fury of the sea with him.
Thủy Tinh arrived to see the wedding procession already underway. His sorrow turned instantly to a fearsome rage. He lifted his hands, and the sky darkened. Rain fell in sheets, and the rivers began to swell, flooding our peaceful fields and turning them into a churning, muddy sea. “If I cannot have her, no one will,” he roared, his voice the sound of a thousand crashing waves. He was trying to wash us away, to claim me by force. But Sơn Tinh was not afraid. He stood on the highest peak, calm and resolute. As Thủy Tinh raised the waters, my husband raised the mountains. For every wave that crashed against our home, he commanded our peak to grow higher, keeping us safe above the turbulent flood. He called upon boulders to form dikes and ancient trees to weave together into great barriers, protecting the people and animals who had fled to high ground. The battle raged for days, a terrifying display of nature's power. The world was a canvas of gray water and brown earth, a conflict between the unyielding mountain and the relentless sea. Finally, exhausted and unable to reach us, Thủy Tinh retreated, his waters receding back to their domain. He had lost, but his anger and jealousy never faded. Every year, during the rainy season, he returns. His sorrow fuels the monsoons and typhoons that flood the lowlands. And every year, Sơn Tinh raises the mountains to protect the land. This story has been told for thousands of years in Vietnam. It is not just about a rivalry; it explains our climate and honors our people's resilience. It teaches us that while nature can be destructive, the human spirit, like the mountain, is strong and enduring. The myth inspires us to work together, to build dikes, and to face the annual floods with courage, reminding us that even after the fiercest storm, we can rebuild, and our land, and our spirit, will remain.
