Hello! My name is Mỵ Nương, and long ago, I lived in a beautiful, green land called Văn Lang, where my father was the great Hùng King. Our home was nestled between tall, misty mountains and the wide, sparkling sea, and I loved them both. But one day, two powerful spirits arrived, each hoping to marry me, and my heart didn't know how to choose. This is the story of Sơn Tinh and Thủy Tinh. Sơn Tinh was the Spirit of the Mountain, strong and gentle, who could make trees grow and flowers bloom. Thủy Tinh was the Spirit of the Sea, with a voice like the crashing waves and eyes as deep as the ocean. My father, the king, saw how powerful they both were and decided to set a challenge. Whoever could bring him the most special wedding gifts first would become my husband.
The king asked for treasures from the land: a nine-tusked elephant, a nine-spurred rooster, a nine-maned horse, and one hundred sticky rice cakes. As soon as he finished speaking, the two spirits rushed off. Sơn Tinh, being the lord of the mountains, knew exactly where to find these amazing creatures and gifts. He moved as fast as the wind through the forests and returned the very next morning with everything my father had asked for. I was so happy, and we were married in a wonderful celebration. But just as the party started, Thủy Tinh arrived. When he saw that I was already married, his heart filled with a storm of sadness and anger. He roared, and the sky turned dark. He called upon the sea to rise, sending giant waves and pouring rain to flood our kingdom, hoping to pull me away with him.

But Sơn Tinh, my brave husband, would not let him harm our people. For every wave Thủy Tinh sent, Sơn Tinh used his magic to raise the mountains higher, creating a strong wall to keep us safe. The battle between the mountain and the sea raged for days, but in the end, Thủy Tinh grew tired and had to retreat. He never forgot his loss, and so every year, he returns, bringing storms and floods to try and win me back. And every year, Sơn Tinh raises the earth to protect us. This story helps explain the rainy season in Vietnam, but it also shows the strength of my people, who build dikes to hold back the water, just like Sơn Tinh raised the mountains. The tale of the mountain and the sea spirit still inspires songs, paintings, and stories, reminding everyone of the power of nature and the courage to protect what you love.
