The story

The Town Musicians of Bremen

My old bones ached, and my master said I wasn't strong enough to carry sacks of flour anymore. He didn't think I was useful, but I knew I still had a song in my heart and a loud 'hee-haw' to share! My name is Donkey, and I decided right then to run away and travel to the famous town of Bremen to become a musician. This is the story of how I and some very special friends found our own music and a new home, a tale you might know as The Town Musicians of Bremen. On the road, I met a sad-looking Dog whose master thought he was too old to hunt. 'Come with me to Bremen!' I said. 'You can bark the rhythm!' Soon after, we found a gloomy Cat who couldn't catch mice like she used to. 'Join us!' we cheered. 'Your meow will be perfect!' Finally, we met a Rooster crowing his heart out on a gate. He was about to become dinner! We knew he had to come with us. Together, the four of us set off for Bremen, a brand-new band on a grand adventure.

As the sun went down, the forest grew dark and spooky. Our tummies rumbled, and our paws and hooves were tired. Just when we were about to give up hope, Rooster spotted a tiny light twinkling through the trees. It was a little cottage! We tiptoed closer and peeked through the window. Inside, a group of robbers were laughing and feasting at a table piled high with delicious food. We were so hungry, but we knew we couldn't just walk in. We needed a clever plan. I stood on my hind legs and put my front hooves on the windowsill. The Dog, with a brave little wiggle, jumped onto my back. The Cat, nimble and quick, scrambled up onto the Dog. Finally, the Rooster flew up and perched right on the Cat's head, puffing out his chest. We were a tall, wobbly tower of friends! When I gave the signal, we all started to sing our special song at the very same time. I brayed, the Dog barked, the Cat meowed, and the Rooster crowed with all his might. It was the loudest, strangest, most wonderful noise you have ever heard!

The robbers inside jumped in fright! They saw our strange, tall shadow in the window and heard our wild music. 'It's a monster!' they shrieked, and they ran out of the cottage and disappeared into the dark woods without looking back. We all cheered and went inside. We ate every last crumb of their feast and found cozy places to sleep. Later that night, one of the robbers snuck back to see what the noise was. But we were ready! The Cat scratched him in the dark, the Dog nipped his leg, I gave him a little kick with my back hoof, and the Rooster crowed 'Cock-a-doodle-doo!' from the rafters. The terrified robber ran for his life, telling his friends that the house was full of a witch, a giant, and a judge! They never came back. We realized we had everything we needed right there. We never made it to Bremen, but we found something much better: a family and a home where we all belonged. Our story, collected by the Brothers Grimm, reminds everyone that you are never too old to find new friends and make your own beautiful music. It shows that when we work together, even the oldest of us can be very brave. Today, you can even see a statue of us in the town of Bremen, a reminder that friendship is the best music of all.
