The story

Thor Makes Thunder

Do you hear that rumbling sound when storm clouds gather? That’s me! My name is Thor, and I live high above the world in a magical place called Asgard. I have a big, strong hammer named Mjöllnir that only I can lift. Sometimes, the sky is too quiet, and the earth below gets very thirsty, and that’s when I know it’s time for an adventure. This is the story of how I, Thor, create thunder and lightning.

First, I call for my two powerful goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, who pull my mighty chariot. We race across the sky, and the wheels of the chariot make a loud, rumbling sound. Rumble, rumble, rumble! That is the first sound of thunder. I feel the wind in my hair and see the world far, far below. When I see the fields and forests looking dry, I lift my special hammer, Mjöllnir. I swing it with all my might, and when it strikes the clouds, a brilliant flash of lightning zips across the sky! FLASH! Then comes the big BOOM! That's the thunder that shakes the world.

After the flash and the boom, gentle rain begins to fall from the clouds. Pitter-patter, pitter-patter. My thunder and lightning bring the rain that the earth needs to grow. The thirsty flowers, tall trees, and growing vegetables all drink up the water and grow big and strong. A long, long time ago, people known as the Vikings told this story to explain the power of storms. So whenever you see a flash of lightning or hear a big clap of thunder, you can imagine me riding my chariot across the sky, bringing a refreshing drink to the earth.
