The story

The Legend of Shahmaran

Deep beneath the warm soil of the earth, where jewels glitter in the dark, is my home. My name is Shahmaran, and I am the queen of all snakes, creatures of wisdom and silence. For centuries, my serpent family and I lived in a secret garden of peace, far from the world of humans and their hurried lives. I always knew that destiny, like a winding river, would one day connect our worlds in the ancient story known as the legend of Shahmaran. Our days were spent in quiet harmony, listening to the secrets the earth whispered through the roots of ancient trees. We were the guardians of powerful knowledge, and my greatest wish was to protect it from those who might use it for selfish reasons. But a queen cannot stop the flow of a river, and I felt the currents of fate pulling a stranger ever closer to our hidden sanctuary.

One day, a young man named Camsap, who was exploring for honey with his friends, stumbled into our world through a hidden well. His friends had abandoned him, but instead of fear, he found wonder in our shimmering kingdom. He was kind and respectful, and I saw no darkness in his heart. I welcomed him, and over the many years that followed, he became my friend and student. "Tell me, Shahmaran," he would ask, "what does this root do?". I taught him the secrets of the earth: which plants could heal sickness, which flowers held sweet poison, and how to listen to the whispers of the wind. Camsap absorbed all my knowledge of medicine and nature, his mind a fertile ground for the seeds of wisdom I planted. Though he loved our peaceful world, I could see in his eyes that he missed the sun and the sky. He longed for the world above. He promised with all his heart that he would never reveal our location. With a heavy heart, I let him return to his home in the city of Tarsus, knowing that a promise made by a human is a fragile thing.

For a long time, Camsap kept his promise. He lived his life, and my world remained a secret. However, the human king of Tarsus fell gravely ill with a mysterious sickness that no doctor could cure. His wicked and ambitious vizier declared that the only cure was to eat the flesh of the legendary Shahmaran. Can you imagine such a terrible idea?. The vizier devised a clever plan to find anyone who had met me, knowing that my magic would leave a mark. He announced that everyone must bathe in a special public bathhouse, for he knew that anyone who had seen me would have glistening, snake-like scales appear on their skin when in the steam. Camsap tried to avoid it, but he was forced to go. As soon as the steam filled the air, the tell-tale shimmer appeared on his back, and he was captured. Torn between his loyalty to me and the threat to his own life, a heartbroken Camsap revealed the entrance to my secret garden. When the king’s soldiers came, I was not surprised. I knew this was my fate, and I went with them calmly to save my friend Camsap from harm.

Before my end, I whispered my final instructions to a tearful Camsap. "Do not grieve, for my wisdom will live on through you. Boil my body in three separate pots," I told him. "My tail holds all the secrets of the universe; its water will seem like the greatest prize. Give it to the vizier. My body holds the power to heal all illnesses; drink its water yourself to gain my knowledge. And my head contains a deadly poison, so be wary.". Camsap did as I asked. The greedy vizier, wanting all the power for himself, snatched the bowl with water from my tail and drank it down, but it ended his life instantly. Camsap drank the water from my body and became the wisest and most respected healer in the land, a man who could cure any sickness. He became known as Lokman the Physician, a legendary wise man whose name is still remembered. My story did not end there. It teaches us about trust, sacrifice, and how true wisdom comes from nature. The legend of Shahmaran is still told across Turkey and beyond, inspiring beautiful paintings and intricate embroidery that show me as a creature with the head of a woman and the body of a serpent. My story reminds everyone that even in loss, there can be healing, and that a good story, like a wise old snake, sheds its skin but never truly dies.
