Hello. We are Heifer International, an organization dedicated to a simple but powerful idea: helping people build better lives for themselves. Our story began not in a big office, but on the front lines of a crisis. Our founder, a man named Dan West, was a relief worker during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Every day, he handed out rations of powdered milk to hungry children and their families. He saw that while the milk helped for a short time, the supply was limited. Once it was gone, the families were hungry again. He knew there had to be a better, more lasting way to help.
Dan West realized that if a family had a cow, they would have a steady supply of milk for their children. They could also use the cow’s manure to fertilize their garden to grow more food. This was a long-term, sustainable solution that could provide nourishment and independence. This insight led to our guiding principle: “Not a cup, but a cow.” It’s the belief that giving people the tools to feed themselves is more powerful than simply giving them a meal. With this idea, our organization was officially founded in 1944. We wanted to offer families not just temporary relief, but a genuine opportunity to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty for good.
From the very beginning, our work was built on a core model that we call “Passing on the Gift.” This model is the heart of what we do. When we provide a family with an animal, such as a cow or a goat, we also provide them with extensive training. They learn how to care for the animal, how to keep it healthy, and how to use its products, like milk or wool, to improve their lives. But there is a special promise that comes with this gift. Each family agrees that when their animal has its first healthy female offspring, they will pass it on to another family in their community. That new family also receives training and makes the same promise to pass on the next generation to someone else.
A Gift That Keeps on Giving: The Story of Heifer International
Hello. We are Heifer International, an organization dedicated to a simple but powerful idea: helping people build better lives for themselves.
This simple act of sharing creates a powerful ripple effect. One animal can eventually help dozens of families. It builds a network of support and shared success within a village or town. “Passing on the Gift” ensures that our initial investment multiplies, transforming recipients into donors themselves. It fosters a spirit of community and shared responsibility, as neighbors help one another build a more secure future. This model isn't just about giving away animals; it’s about sharing knowledge, building relationships, and empowering entire communities to become self-reliant. It’s a chain of giving that strengthens the social fabric and creates lasting change from within.
Our journey began with a single project: sending 17 heifers—young female cows—by ship to farmers in Puerto Rico. From those humble beginnings, we grew into a global organization, working on multiple continents to address the unique challenges faced by different communities. We quickly learned that a cow wasn't always the right solution for every environment or family. To be effective, we had to adapt. We expanded our programs to include other types of livestock that were better suited to different climates and landscapes. We began providing goats, which can thrive in rocky terrain, and chickens, which produce eggs and meat relatively quickly.
Over the decades, our approach continued to evolve. We recognized that true self-reliance required more than just livestock. We started providing other vital resources, such as high-quality seeds for farmers to grow more nutritious crops and bees for pollination and producing honey, which can be sold for extra income. Our focus broadened from helping individual families to supporting comprehensive community development. We began helping small-scale farmers organize into cooperatives. By working together, farmers can combine their products to sell in larger markets, get better prices, share resources and equipment, and have a stronger voice in their local economies. This shift represented a deeper understanding that ending poverty requires strengthening the entire system that people depend on.
Today, our mission continues to be to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. We work toward a world where every family has the resources and opportunities to live a dignified and prosperous life. Our modern work has a strong focus on empowering women farmers, as they often play a central role in managing household nutrition and small-scale agriculture. When women have control over resources, the health and education of the entire family often improve. We also promote sustainable agricultural practices that protect the environment, improve soil health, and ensure that farmers can thrive for generations to come. Finally, we focus on connecting communities to markets, helping them turn their hard work into a reliable income. By helping millions of families achieve self-reliance, we continue to carry forward Dan West’s original vision of a gift that truly keeps on giving.
