A Gift That Keeps on Giving: The Story of Heifer International

Hello! We are Heifer International, and we work with people all over the world to help them build better lives. Our story started a long time ago with a man named Dan West. During his work, he saw many families who didn't have enough to eat. He would help by giving them a cup of milk, but he noticed that this only helped for one day. The next day, they were hungry again. Dan West thought there must be a better way to help. He came up with a big idea: what if instead of giving a family a cup of milk, you gave them a whole cow? A cow could give fresh milk every single day. It was a gift that could keep on giving. In 1944, our organization was started to make this wonderful idea a reality for families who needed it most.

Our very first project was to help families in a place called Puerto Rico. We carefully chose 17 young cows, which are called heifers, and sent them to live with new families. But we did more than just deliver the animals. We also started a very special rule that we still use today. We call it “Passing on the Gift.” It’s a simple promise. When a family receives an animal from us, they agree to give its first baby to another family in their community. This is our most important idea because it means one gift doesn’t stop with one family. It spreads like a ripple in a pond, helping more and more people. It also helps neighbors work together and share their success, making the entire community stronger.

When we first began, we mostly gave families heifers, just like in our first project. But as we worked in more places around the world, we learned a lot. We realized that while a cow is perfect for some families, other animals might be better for others depending on the land and the local climate. So, we started to provide other animals, too! Now, we might give a family goats for their rich milk, or a flock of chickens that can provide eggs every day. We also help families learn to care for bees, which give sweet honey and help gardens grow. Along with the animals, we teach people important skills, like how to take the best care of their new animals to keep them healthy and strong. We also show them how to grow healthy gardens, giving them even more good food to eat and sometimes extra to sell at the market.

Today, we continue this important work in many different countries. Our main goal has always stayed the same: to help families end hunger and poverty for good, not just for a day or a week. We believe that the best way to do this is to give people the tools and knowledge they need to help themselves. We help them learn new skills, build their own small businesses, and create a brighter, more hopeful future for their children. By working together with communities, we help them become strong and self-reliant. That way, they can continue to grow and succeed long after our part of the work is done, passing on their gifts for many years to come.
