Heifer International

Hello! We are Heifer International. We are a group of helpers who work with families all around the world. Our main purpose is to help people grow their own healthy food so they never have to be hungry. We do this in a very special way. We give families a very important gift: an animal! Sometimes we bring a friendly goat that gives fresh, creamy milk for drinking. Other times it might be a flock of chickens that lay yummy eggs for breakfast. We might even bring a family a strong cow. These animals help families have good food to eat every single day.

Giving an animal is just the first part of our job. We also teach families everything they need to know to take great care of their new animal friend. We show them how to build a safe, cozy home for the animal. We also teach them what kind of food will keep it healthy and strong. Then, the most wonderful part of our plan happens. When the family’s animal has a baby, they share it! This is our most important idea, and we call it “Passing on the Gift.” A family that received a goat will give its first baby goat to a neighbor who needs help.

This one simple act of sharing helps so many people. The gift keeps moving from one family to another, and then to another family after that. Soon, a whole community has fresh milk from goats and healthy eggs from chickens. We started doing this a long time ago, and we are still going. We work in many different countries, helping families have the food they need to grow and be strong. Our work continues today because we believe that by sharing, we can help end hunger for everyone, everywhere.
