Just want Royal Flying Doctor Service?
Hello! We are the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Our story began a long time ago with a man named Reverend John Flynn. He traveled all around Australia and saw how big the country was, especially the area called the outback. In the outback, towns and homes can be very, very far apart from each other, with huge open spaces in between.
Reverend Flynn noticed that the people living there had a serious problem. If someone got sick or had an accident, the nearest doctor or hospital might be hundreds of miles away. It could take days to travel that far. He knew this was dangerous and wanted to find a way to help. He had a wonderful idea: what if he used airplanes, which were a new invention back then, to bring doctors and nurses directly to the people who needed them?
We put his idea into action. Our very first flight took off on a special day: May 17th, 1928. A brave pilot named Arthur Affleck flew a small plane from a town called Cloncurry to help someone who was far away. In those early days, we weren't called the Royal Flying Doctor Service yet. Our name was the Aerial Medical Service. That first trip was so important because it showed everyone that Reverend Flynn’s idea could really work. We proved that we could use planes to save lives in the outback.
But we soon discovered another big problem. We had a plane and a doctor ready to go, but we had no way of knowing when someone needed help. People in the outback couldn't just pick up a phone and call us. This is where an amazing inventor named Alfred Traeger came in. He created a special two-way radio just for us. The cleverest part was that it didn't need electricity. People could power it by pushing pedals with their feet, just like riding a bicycle! This incredible invention allowed people in the most faraway places to finally talk to our doctors and call for help when there was an emergency.

Our planes are not like regular airplanes. You can think of them as small hospitals with wings. Inside each plane, we make sure we have everything a doctor or nurse needs. There is a bed where a patient can lie down comfortably and safely. We also carry important medical machines that help us check on our patients, just like in a hospital. We have all the right medicine, too. Our team of doctors and nurses can provide care while we are flying high in the sky. It doesn't matter if the sun is shining or if there's a big storm; we fly whenever someone needs us.
Today, we are still the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and our work is more important than ever. Every year, we help thousands of people all across Australia. We still fly to help in emergencies, but we do much more than that. Our teams also fly to communities to provide regular health check-ups, visit the dentist, and offer other important health services. We use modern planes and the latest technology to continue Reverend John Flynn’s mission: bringing excellent healthcare to everyone, no matter how far away they live.
