Just want UNESCO?
Hello! We are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. That is a very long name, so most people call us by our short name, UNESCO. We are a special part of a larger group of countries called the United Nations. Our story began a long time ago, in 1946. The world had just been through a very big and sad war, and people everywhere wanted to make sure something like that would never happen again. Leaders from many countries came together and decided that the best way to prevent wars was not just with rules, but by building peace inside the minds of people. That became our most important job: to help people all over the world understand and respect each other.
To build peace, we focus on the things in our name: education, science, and culture. Education means learning. We believe that when everyone has a chance to learn, they can build better lives for themselves and their communities. Science is about discovery and understanding how the world works. When scientists from different countries share their ideas, they can solve big problems together. Culture is all the special ways that people live, from the stories they tell and the music they make to the beautiful buildings they create. By sharing these things, we learn how much we have in common, even if we live far apart.
We have two very big jobs that help us with our mission. One of our most famous jobs is to protect special places around the world. We call these places World Heritage Sites. These aren't just any old buildings or parks. They are places of amazing beauty or great importance to the history of all people. One example is the Great Wall of China, a massive wall that stretches for thousands of miles. We work to make sure that these treasures are kept safe, so that people today and for many, many years to come can visit them, learn from them, and be inspired by them. It's like we're guardians for the world's most amazing landmarks.
We Are UNESCO: Building Peace Together

Our other really important job is to help make sure every single child gets the chance to go to school. We know that being able to read, write, and learn is one of the most powerful tools a person can have. Education opens up a world of ideas and opportunities. It helps people understand their own history and the lives of others. When children are educated, they grow up to be adults who can solve problems peacefully and work together to build a better future. We help countries build schools, train teachers, and create books so that learning can reach everyone, no matter where they are born.
Today, we are still working hard for a more peaceful future. We continue to bring people together from different countries to share their wonderful cultures, their exciting art, and their brilliant scientific ideas. We help organize festivals where people can share their music and dance. We support museums that protect important art. We help scientists collaborate on protecting our oceans and our planet. We believe that every time someone learns a song from another country, reads a story from a different culture, or works with a scientist from across the world, a little bit of understanding grows. By learning from each other in these ways, we are helping to build a world that is more peaceful and connected for everyone.
