Just want Ancient Romans?
Hello! We are the Ancient Romans. Our story began a very long time ago on the land we now call Italy. We started as a small village, but we grew and grew over many hundreds of years. We have a famous legend that tells the story of our beginning. The legend says that our great city, Rome, was founded by twin brothers named Romulus and Remus. Their story says they were raised by a friendly wolf who took care of them when they were babies! From that small start, our home became the center of a giant and powerful empire that stretched far and wide.
We were known for being amazing builders and engineers. To help us travel and move things across our huge empire, we built thousands of miles of roads. We made them very long and straight so that people could get from one place to another quickly. You can still see some of our roads today, even after all this time! We also figured out how to make a special kind of strong concrete. This invention helped us build enormous structures that had never been seen before. Using our concrete and a shape called an arch, we could build things that were tall and strong. We built the famous Colosseum, a huge stadium where people watched gladiator games. We also built amazing bridges called aqueducts that looked like long rows of arches. These aqueducts were like water highways, carrying fresh, clean water to our cities from miles away.
Our cities were very busy places full of people. Many of us lived in apartment buildings that were several stories high. Richer families had bigger homes with beautiful open courtyards in the middle where they could relax. Our clothing was simple and comfortable for the warm weather. Most of us wore a piece of clothing called a tunic. If you were an important citizen, you would also wear a special long cloth called a toga wrapped over your tunic. We had many ways to have fun and spend our time. Many of us loved going to the public bathhouses. These were not just for getting clean—they were places to meet our friends and relax. The center of our city was called the forum, and it was always bustling with activity. We would go there to shop for food and other goods at the busy markets.

Even though our empire ended a long time ago, you can still find our ideas and inventions all around you. Our language was called Latin, and it became the parent of many languages that people speak today, including Spanish and French. So when people speak those languages, they are using words that grew from ours! Our ideas about laws and how a government should work are also still used in many countries around the world. We are also remembered for the incredible buildings we left behind. Today, people from all over the world travel to visit the ruins of our cities, roads, and buildings like the Colosseum. When they see these ruins, they can learn about how we lived and all the amazing things we created.
