Tuareg people

Hello, we are the Tuareg people. Our home is in a very big, sandy place called the Sahara Desert. The sun shines brightly on the sand all day. We travel across our desert home, and it is a long journey. We have amazing animal friends who help us. Our camels walk with us across the hot sand. They are very strong and can carry the things we need. We are happy to have our camels to help us travel through the desert.

Because the sun is so bright, we wear special clothes to cover up. Our clothes are a beautiful, deep blue color. To make this color, we use a special dye that comes from a plant called indigo. Sometimes, the pretty blue dye rubs off our clothes and onto our skin! This is why some people gave us the nickname the “Blue People.” Our men wear a special veil to cover their heads and faces from the sun and sand. This veil is called a tagelmust. Our blue clothes help keep us safe and cool in the desert.

We love our families very much. It is important for us to be together. We enjoy gathering with our friends and family to share sweet tea. We pour it carefully into small glasses. It is a warm and friendly time for everyone. We also love music and singing our songs. Today, we still live in the desert. We continue to care for our animals and teach our children our traditions. Sharing our songs and our tea helps us remember who we are.
