Hello! We are the people you call Vikings. We came from a place called Scandinavia, which today includes the countries of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We lived a very long time ago, during a time that historians call the Viking Age. Many stories tell of us as warriors, and it is true that some of us were. But most of us were peaceful people who lived in families, just like people do today. We were farmers who grew crops in the fields and crafters who made beautiful things with our hands.
One of the things we are most famous for is our ships. We built incredible wooden boats called longships. They were special because they were very long and narrow, a shape that helped them move quickly through the water. Our longships could sail across the deep, wide oceans, but they could also travel in shallow rivers where other boats could not go. On the front of our ships, we often carved the heads of animals to make them look impressive. These amazing ships allowed us to become great explorers, able to travel to distant lands.
At home, our families lived in special buildings called longhouses. Just like their name, they were very long buildings made of wood and earth. Many family members, from grandparents to little children, lived together under one roof. In the center of the longhouse, we had a fire pit. This fire kept us warm during the cold winters and was also where we cooked all our meals. During the day, we worked hard. Many of us were farmers, planting seeds and taking care of the land. We also raised animals like cows and sheep. In the evenings, we gathered around the fire and told exciting stories called sagas, which were tales of brave heroes and great adventures.

Our longships took us on great journeys across the sea. We were curious people who wanted to see what was beyond the horizon. We sailed to many new places and were among the first people from our part of the world to travel to lands like Iceland and Greenland. Some of our explorers even sailed all the way to North America. When we traveled, we weren't always raiding. We were also traders who met other people and exchanged goods. We brought things like soft furs and shiny jewelry to trade for items we needed or wanted. Our travels connected us to many different parts of the world.
Even though the Viking Age ended long ago, you can still find parts of our world in yours today. Our language left its mark. For example, the English word 'Thursday' comes from the name of our god, Thor. People who study the past, called archaeologists, still find things we left behind. They have discovered our longships buried in the ground and the tools we used in our daily lives. Our stories are also still popular. People enjoy reading the tales about our gods, like Thor, and learning about our adventures. In these ways, our history continues to be shared.
