The story

We Are the Wayuu People

Hello! We are the Wayuu people. We want to tell you about our home and our families.

Our home is a special place called the La Guajira Peninsula. It is a desert land, with lots of sand and warm sunshine. But our desert home is right next to the big, blue sea! We can see the waves and feel the ocean breeze. Our home is in countries called Colombia and Venezuela. We have lived in this beautiful place for a very, very long time. Our grandparents and their grandparents lived here, too.

Our families are very important to us. We love being together. We live in communities called rancherías. In our rancherías, we can all be close to our family members and help one another. Living together makes us happy and strong. One of the things we are known for is our beautiful weaving. Our hands are busy making colorful things for our families and homes.

Our women are wonderful weavers. They create amazing patterns with bright threads. They make special bags that we call mochilas. Each mochila is filled with colors, like a rainbow you can carry! Weaving is something special that is passed down in our families. We are proud to be the Wayuu people, living in our desert home by the sea, taking care of our families, and making beautiful things together.
