Just want Yoruba People?
Hello! We are the Yoruba people, and we are happy to share our story with you. Our homeland, the place where our ancestors first built their communities, is in West Africa. If you were to look on a map today, you would find our lands in the countries of Nigeria and Benin. Our history here is very long. Long ago, our ancestors were skilled builders who created large communities. They even built big, busy cities, and one of our most well-known ancient cities is called Ile-Ife. We can imagine its streets filled with people, with artists creating beautiful things, and families living and working together. Today, many of us still live in our homeland in Africa, but our communities have also spread across the globe. You can find Yoruba people living in many different countries all over the world. But no matter where we call home, our culture remains very strong and important to us. A central part of our culture is our language, which is also called Yoruba. Speaking our language helps connect us to each other and to our shared history.
We have always loved to express our ideas and stories, and we do this in many beautiful ways, especially through our art and music. For centuries, our artists have been famous for making amazing sculptures. Many of these sculptures are carefully made to look like real people, showing their faces and clothing in great detail. We also have a tradition of weaving cloth with bright, beautiful colors and interesting patterns. Each design can tell a story or show something important about the person wearing it. Music is another powerful way we communicate. We have a very special kind of drum that we call a “talking drum.” It’s not just for making a beat! A skilled drummer can change the pitch of the drum, making its sound go higher or lower. By doing this, the drummer can copy the tones of our Yoruba language. This allows them to send messages or share stories that can be understood from far away. Our music and our art often teach younger generations about our history. They also share our traditional beliefs, including stories about spirits we call Orishas.

In our communities, family is one of the most important things. We believe in being close to our relatives and taking care of one another. A special part of this is showing great respect to our elders—our grandparents and other older members of the community. We listen to them and learn from their experiences because they have a lot of wisdom to share. They pass down our traditions and stories, helping to keep our culture strong for the future. Our Yoruba culture is not something that only existed in the past. It is alive and growing today. We are proud to see parts of our culture being shared and enjoyed all around the world. You might hear the rhythms of our music in popular songs, or taste flavors from our homeland in different foods. Our stories and ideas even appear in books and movies. We are a modern people, and we are proud to carry our traditions with us while living modern lives.
